Are you reminded your pantry needs a little TLC every time you open the door? Keeping it under control – much less organized – can feel like a daunting task, but sticking to a schedule may help you manage it.
Plan to clean out your pantry at least once every three to six months. It’s an effective way to get rid of expired items and make sure everything is fresh and ready to use. But, if you notice any signs of pests or spills, you may want to clean it out more frequently.
Cleaning out your pantry can be a satisfying and productive task. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you efficiently tackle the chore:
Depending on the size of your pantry and how cluttered it is, set aside a sufficient amount of time to complete the task. It could take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.
Before you start, gather cleaning supplies such as a vacuum or broom, cleaning solution or wipes, microfiber cloths, trash bags, and organizing bins or containers if needed.
Take everything out of your pantry. This includes food items, kitchen appliances, storage containers, and anything else that may be stored there. Lay them out on your kitchen counter or table.
Go through all the food items and check their expiration dates. Dispose of any items that are expired or past their prime. Also, look for signs of spoilage like unusual smells, mold, or pests.
Sort through the remaining items, grouping similar items together. This will help you see what you have and make it easier to organize. Consider organizing by categories such as grains, canned goods, spices, snacks, etc.
While the pantry is empty, take the opportunity to clean the shelves and surfaces thoroughly. Use a vacuum or broom to remove any crumbs or debris, then wipe down the shelves with a damp cloth or cleaning solution.
If you use storage containers for items like flour, sugar, or rice, check them for cleanliness and usability. Clean any dirty containers and replace any damaged ones.
Put everything back into the pantry in an organized manner. Place frequently used items at eye level for easy access, and store less frequently used items on higher or lower shelves.
Consider labeling containers or shelves to help you and your family members locate items easily. Also, if you have bulk items, label them with the purchase or expiration date for reference.
If you have unopened, non-perishable items that you know you won’t use, consider donating them to a local food pantry or charity. Discard any unusable or expired items properly.
Once you’ve completed these steps, here’s how you can maintain its organized state longer. Keep a running list of what you have on hand, then make note of what you need to restock to prevent overbuying.
Remove excess packaging from the manufacturer to create more space, and maximize what your pantry can hold with shelf risers, over-the-door shelves, turntables, and reusable storage containers.
